COUNCILLORS have rubber stamped the refusal of Tesco's plans to revitalise the Riverside Centre, stating: "Burton deserves better."

East Staffordshire Borough Council’s planning committee met yesterday to discuss the supermarket giant’s bid to build nine retail units on the High Street site.

Planning bosses from Tesco asked for any decision to be deferred so further talks could ensue with the borough council.

However, as expected, the committee unanimously threw the proposals out, saying they were ‘out of character’ for the area.

Pleas were made for the council and Tesco to come to an agreement sooner rather than later to rescue the gateway into the town.

Valerie Burton, from the town’s civic society, said: “We hope you will work to get something achieved in the next 12 months. The site has been an eyesore for too long.”
