Local Economy and Town Centres

The Civic Trust is setting up the Special Interest Groups embracing all members (and others), local and national, focussed on place shaping to complement the geographically based Civic Societies and organisations associated with them locally. The purpose is to increase cross membership participation based on subject matter areas of expertise. In a survey conducted in 2007 42% of societies identified the local economy as a main theme of their society work. Night Vision and Purple Flag

The Civic Trust and new economics foundation believe that the local economy is at the heart of regeneration and that in partnership with the public sector, residents and entrepreneurs are best placed to support and grow their own local economies and become key investors in Place Shaping. This key principle, along with our client-focused delivery supported by active networks, provides the basis for our enterprise development programmes.

Economic development in the UK tends toward removing external barriers to entrepreneurial success. Evidence from our programmes shows that by focusing on and removing entrepreneurs’ internal barriers (cultural issues, lack of confidence, limiting self beliefs, etc), the number of business start ups in areas of the greatest economic decline rises, both in profit and not-for-profit enterprises.

We value and support entrepreneurial behaviour and believe that it is everywhere. In every community there are people who are passionate about starting businesses and social enterprises, or who care about the growth of local economies. Our programmes have helped thousands of residents to realise their dreams, people who have gone on to start and grow businesses, provide services to their own communities, helped attract investment into their local high streets, who have created their own regeneration plans and having gained support from their local authorities, have put their plans into action. This document offers you some programme details, illustrated by the stories of successful entrepreneurs.

Our vision is of vibrant, thriving places with people and communities at the heart.

Collaboration is the key. From new housing developments to a range of business and leisure facilities, The Civic Trust work on projects to transform areas in partnership with communities.
