The Civic Trust is setting up the Special Interest Groups embracing all members (and others), local and national, focussed on place shaping to complement the geographically based Civic Societies and organisations associated with them locally. The purpose is to increase cross membership participation based on subject matter areas of expertise. In a survey conducted in 2007 83% of societies identified open spaces as a main theme of their society work. The Civic Trust currently demonstrates its involvement in improving the standard of Green Spaces across the UK through the Green Flag Award programme. A record 554 Green Flag Awards have this year been given to sites across the country - an increase of 30% compared to last year. 55% of local authority areas now have one or more parks flying the flag, a symbol of a well managed, quality green space.
