A Civic Society is a group of people who care passionately about their surroundings and who want to change them for the better.
The reason for setting up a new community organisation is usually in response to a threat or an opportunity to improve the quality of life of local people. By getting together people carry more sway. Their concerns and aspirations are more likely to be listened to if they work together. Their pool of experience and re-sources is so much greater and so is their ability to attract money from inside and outside the community to help pay for the improvements they undertake.
Start by finding out what’s going on in your neighbourhood and make sure there is no clash with other organisations with the same aims. Gather together a small group (8 - 10 people at most) to work towards founding your organisa-tion. At your first meeting have an agenda: a list of things to do and decide. Make sure everyone has a chance to speak and try and establish a positive atmosphere. To learn more about how to start a Civic Society please please click here
